This is my entry for the James and The Giant Peach Contest. For as long as I can remember, I dreamed of being in a nebula. I imagined the weightlessness and the forming life flowing around me as if I were a part of this grand dance. The first time that I went scuba diving, I felt sensations very much like the ones I imagined in my nebula world. Everything-the flickering of light filtering through the coral, the gentle motion of the water around me, the playful darting of sea life seemed a song and dance; an alternate world that I had slipped into. For this image, I tried to meld the two worlds. I wanted the viewer to look at it and wonder whether they were viewing an underwater scene or the birthing of stars in a far away nebula. Some of the coral looks more cloud-like while some becomes more solid. I hope you enjoy stepping into this world where the lines between up and down, water and air, recognizable and otherwordly become lost and the boundaries of definition slip away.
The medium for this is watercolor with a touch of colored pencil. The mermaid is based off a combination of a spotted eagle ray and a whale shark. Also see if you can spot the fan coral, the azure sponges, and the brain coral.
